Drinking Water in Madoc
How is the Township of Madoc Affected by Policies in the Source Protection Plan?
The vulnerable areas for the Village of Madoc municipal water supply extend north from the Municipality of Centre Hastings into the Township of Madoc. Activities in the Township can potentially affect the quality of water contributing to the Village wells. Policies in the Source Protection Plan call for measures to protect the water source.
What is the water source?
Groundwater is the source of drinking water for the Village of Madoc. The two municipal wells for the Village of Madoc draw water from the surrounding ground but are also influenced by the quality of water flowing in nearby Deer and Madoc Creeks. This is because the fractured bedrock in the area has many cracks and crevices which allow surface water in the creeks to easily and quickly enter the groundwater. Both wells are therefore considered Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of surface water or ‘GUDI' Wells.
How is the drinking water source protected?
Ontario's Clean Water Act was created specifically to protect drinking water at the source rather than simply relying on water treatment alone to deliver safe, clean water. Because of scientific work completed under this Act, Village of Madoc wells now have a mapped Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) that is protected through policies in the Quinte Region Source Protection Plan.
