QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES A FLOOD WARNING FOR MOIRA RIVER AND NAPANEE RIVER
WATERSHEDS – UPDATE #1

Water levels on the Moira River from Stoco Lake to Corbyville are continuing to rise and are expected to peak by Sunday, April 9th. Quinte Conservation forecasts that water levels in this section of the river will be comparable to those of 2017.

Residents who need sand and/or sandbags should contact their municipality or visit their local hardware store. Information on how to sandbag can be found in this brochure at https://www.quinteconservation.ca/en/watershed-management/resources/Documents/how_to_sandbag.pdf or through this instructional video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zha8ypMvYRc&t=2s

Residents in low lying areas should take the necessary precautions to protect their properties. Please ensure sump pumps are functioning and the outlet is clear from obstruction, and secure items that might float away as flows increase.

The upper Moira, Black, Skootamatta, Salmon, and Napanee Rivers as well as watershed lakes have peaked or are peaking in response to last week’s rainfall. Most watercourses only reached bankfull. Stoco Lake approached 1 in 10-year flood levels and the Moira River in Tweed reached 1 in 10-year flood levels.

Next week’s forecast of warmer temperatures will melt any remaining snowpack and will cause watercourses to maintain or increase their water levels.

No significant flooding is expected on the creeks in Prince Edward County.

All remaining ice surfaces should be considered unstable due to warming temperatures and higher flows. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies and to stay away from open and fast flowing water, culverts, dams, ice covered water, and banks.

Staff will continue to monitor conditions. For current water levels or to report changes in water levels, residents are encouraged to visit QuinteConservation.ca.

A FLOOD WARNING: Notifies that flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.

This message will be in effect until (or updated before) April 13, 2023.
