QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES A WATER SAFETY STATEMENT FOR NORTH SHORE LAKE ONTARIO DUE TO HIGH WINDS AND WAVES
Local weather forecasts for the Quinte Conservation Watershed are predicting a weather system that will bring sustained strong winds across Lake Ontario beginning Wednesday and continuing into Friday. Winds are forecasted to reach 50 km/hr by late Wednesday, increasing in intensity with gusts up to 80-100 km/hr for most of Thursday. Winds are expected to subside to 40 km/hr on Friday. The forecasted winds may result in storm surges with waves exceeding 1.5 metres along the north shore of Lake Ontario. Due to high winds and storm surges, flooding and erosion damage is possible. Residents should pay close attention to weather forecasts for approaching storm systems with high southeast, south or southwest winds.
Staff will continue to monitor conditions. For current water levels or to report changes in water levels, residents are encouraged to visit QuinteConservation.ca.
A WATER SAFETY STATEMENT indicates that high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for users such as anglers, boaters, swimmers, children or pets. Flooding is not expected.
