FLOOD OUTLOOK STATEMENT REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR QUINTE CONSERVATION WATERSHED
With warmer temperatures expected in the Quinte region later this week, there is a potential for snow melt and the increase in flows which may cause nuisance flooding in some areas.
Residents are also reminded to be extremely cautious around local waterways and to stay off all ice covered water bodies as conditions may become unstable.
General Manager Terry Murphy says, “Staff will continue to monitor ice conditions and all river systems in the Quinte Conservation watershed.”
Murphy adds, “Residents are encouraged to contact the Quinte Conservation office at 613-968-3434 if they observe sudden increases in water levels or the formation of ice jams.”
Quinte Conservation warns the public that stream banks should be avoided in the winter. Ice and snow make footing unpredictable and frigid open water conditions are extremely dangerous. Areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided at all times. While Quinte Conservation does not measure ice thickness for recreational activities, the organization provides information on watershed safety conditions.
A Flood Outlook Statement gives early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) Tuesday, January 23, 2018.
