2026-08-25 - HERBICIDE TREATMENT IS PART OF ONGOING WATER SOLDIER MANAGEMENT IN THE BAY OF QUINTE
Water Soldier (Stratiotes aloides) is an invasive aquatic plant in the Bay of Quinte that can form dense mats, crowd native plants, and interfere with boating, fishing and other recreational activities. Join Quinte Conservation and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for an information night to learn more about Water Soldier, the different ways it is being managed in the Bay of Quinte, and the herbicide treatment being used in targeted areas.
“This information night is really for any individual who uses or cares about the Bay of Quinte. This includes residents, waterfront property owners, anglers, boaters and anyone interested in the health of local waterways. We want people to come learn more about Water Soldier, how to identify and report it, and the different ways we are working to manage it,” says Mary Gunning, Aquatic Science Manager with Quinte Conservation.
Quinte Conservation, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters are working together to monitor and manage Water Soldier in the Bay of Quinte. The information night will give residents an inside look at this work, including how Water Soldier is identified and reported, the various methods being used to manage it, and how herbicide treatment is being used in targeted areas. Staff from these organizations will be available to answer questions.
For those living on or enjoying the Bay of Quinte, knowing what Water Soldier looks like and what to do if you find it is one of the most important ways to help prevent its spread.
