2020-09-20 MINISTRY APPROVES AMENDMENTS TO THE QUINTE REGION SOURCE PROTECTION PLAN FOR AREAS OF MADOC, BELLEVILLE, AND PICTON

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks approved amendments to the Quinte Region Source Protection Plan, Assessment Report and Explanatory Document in September 2019. The amendment includes:

  • Expanded and revised water quality protection areas around the existing intakes of the Belleville and Picton drinking water systems
  • A revised water quality protection area around the new and existing wells of the Madoc drinking water system
  • Updated source protection plan mapping to reflect revised protection areas

Source Water Protection Coordinator, Amy Dickens, says “These amendments were made because of new developments in the areas of Belleville and Picton’s drinking water intake protection zones and to resolve water supply challenges in the Village of Madoc by creating a new well. It’s important to mention that there weren’t any changes to the policies in the source protection plan, which means the existing policies will apply to the revised protection areas.”

Quinte Conservation completed the amendments in accordance with the legislative and regulatory requirements set out in the Clean Water Act, 2006 and Ontario Regulation 287/07(General).

Notice of the amendment can be found on the Environmental Bill of Rights registry, post #019-0476. The amendments took effect upon the decision being posted on the Environmental Registry, September 16, 2019.

The initiative to protect sources of municipal drinking water is directed and funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks under the Clean Water Act, 2006. Quinte Conservation provided local technical, communications and administrative support for the planning process. Source Protection Plans have also been prepared in other regions across the province.
