Looking for a back-country camping experience?

With 20 boat-in only sites nestled along the shoreline, every camper will have a view of the lake. Sites are distanced from each other so visitors can enjoy the peace and tranquility that nature has to offer.

PLEASE NOTE: Gear taxi services will not be available during the 2021 camping season.

The European Gypsy Moth

Like many other regions across Ontario, Depot Lakes Campground is experiencing an influx in populations of the highly invasive Lymantria dispar dispar (LDD), commonly known as the European Gypsy Moth.

During your visit, it is very likely you will encounter LDD moths or caterpillars. LDD caterpillars generally feed on oak tree leaves, but during an outbreak year like this one, they spread to many other tree species.

Although invasive, this creature is not harmful to humans. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure to avoid handling the caterpillars with your bare skin as their hairs can be irritating and may cause rashes.
  • Remember to bring a tarp or dining shelter for your campsite's sitting area to protect your food from the caterpillar waste that falls from above.
  • Don't move firewood long distances. LDD moths, Emerald Ash Borers and other invasive forest pests may be in the wood you are transporting. Make sure to always source your wood locally in order to help stop the spread.
  • Clean off your camping gear before you leave to make sure you aren't carrying these forest pests home.
